Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators in Tacoma, WA
One of the most important rules of maintaining HVAC efficiency is that you’re not supposed to open the windows and doors while operating your air conditioner or heater. Some will even have the leaks and cracks in their home sealed in order to keep as much air inside as possible. But at the same time, there’s another important rule: you need to have fresh air circulating through your home to keep air quality high. So, what are you supposed to do?
Fortunately, the heat and energy recovery ventilator systems exist. And even more fortunate for you, Miller Comfort Systems is an HVAC contractor fully qualified to install these devices for you. And we do urge you to have them installed by a professional, since installation requires careful and precise work inside your HVAC ducts. How Do Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators Work?
The simplest way to explain how these systems work is by imagining exchanging your indoor air with outdoor air. A heat exchanger inside the device will balance the temperatures between the air so that, as the new and fresh air enters your system, your heater or air conditioner won’t have to use up as much energy.
On the other hand, if you simply opened the window to get fresh air inside, you would lose the indoor air and need to expend even more energy to balance the temperatures. HRV and ERV systems can be used in both summer and in winter, to respectively cool or heat the incoming air.
Which is Better, ERV or HRV System?
All these acronyms and terms may confuse you, but essentially, the two systems are the same and can be used in the same way. However, the energy recovery ventilator system can also transfer humidity along with heat. That means this system can actively lower humidity in your home during the summer.
Even then, there are other factors that can determine which system is best for you. Things like insulation and overall home efficiency can determine which system is best. But in the end, that choice doesn’t have to be up to you. Simply inform your assigned HVAC tech that humidity is a problem for your home, and they’ll do what they must to resolve that issue for you.
